TEDxCSM

Last month we hosted own TED event at King’s Cross on the theme of ‘Emergence’.

Starting out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design, TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading”. TEDx events are self-organized, local conferences, bringing participants together to experience a TED-style event.

TEDxCSM was organised by a group of our MA Communication Design students and was introduced by legendary designer Michael Wolff. The entire event was streamed live and followed by a live Google + hangout chat with the participants. Videos of all the talks are available on the TEDxCSM website. This is CSM’s first TEDx event, following Senior Research Fellow Suzanne Lee’s TED talk “Grow Your Own Clothes” last year.

Building Digital Capacity for the Arts

The BBC and Arts Council England, in association with Central Saint Martins, yesterday ran a seminar exploring emerging business models for the digital environment – focussing on arts organisations.

As part of the Building Digital Capacity for the Arts programme, speakers discussed the myriad opportunities and challenges afforded by digital technologies. Students from CSM’s MA Innovation Management wrote stimulus articles for the seminar, tweeted throughout, and are writing further pieces in response to the topics raised.

Marcus Romer, Artistic Director of Pilot Theatre created his own definition of the ‘5 Ps’: Permission to try new things; determine your Purpose; choose your Platform; be a Pirate in order to “rock your boat”; and Play in order to push the opportunities that digital technologies can give your organisation. Jane Finnis of Culture24 suggested that investment in a mobile friendly site is a better way to spend your money than producing an app. Hen Norton, founder of crowd-funding site We Did This, explained how micro-philanthropy can be used as a way for organisations to evidence an audience desire for their product. Nicole Yershon gave an overview of her role at Ogilvy and Mather, and how the research undertaken by Ogilvy Labs supports and develops business growth.
